Holiday time is a time to celebrate meeting new people, trying new drinks, perhaps even different food. The up side is you might make a few friends, but the down side is gaining a few pounds. Marcie Fraser has some helpful tips.

"There is a pretty persistent trend of folks gaining weight around the holidays and research also shows that those folks don't tend to lose that weight after they gained it, so it is challenging time," said Ellie Wilson, a nutritionist.

Start this holiday season in the right direction by keeping a food log.

“One of the most proven ways to promote weight loss or manage weight loss is writing foods down, it can be as simple as a pad of paper on your desk," said Wilson.

Holiday shopping can often lead to weight gain.

"Keep moving you know you are going to be shopping, don't even try to park close to the venue, park on the perimeter and get those extra calories in and walk up those stairs," said Wilson.

Sweets and treats also need to be managed. Manage with moderation, one bite of something yummy with three bites of something that is healthier and don't go to a party hungry.

"Have a piece of fruit, a whole piece of fruit twenty minutes or so ahead of when you are getting to the party or maybe a cup of soup, call it a ‘souper saver.’ There is usually 100 to 120 calories broth based soup, something high in vegetables is a great idea," said Wilson.

A dieter’s nightmare could be the calorie laden buffet. The first tip is be sure to peruse the entire buffet before making your selection.

"Don't start at one end and start loading up they are all the typical things. Go see exactly what you like to have from that buffet and make sure you get to the all the way to the end of it and manage those things," said Wilson.
