He doesn't put much stock in Black Friday.

''Black Friday isn't a really huge thing for us and stuff, it's more a gimmick for the bigger stores," said Clifford Powers, Lander's Men's Store Owner.

Clifford Powers, owner of Lander's Men Store in Jamestown will once again take part in Small Business Saturday.

It's a national program encouraging shoppers to ditch the big box stores this Saturday and support their local economy.

"Its very very crucial for the small businesses, they'll talk to you, they'll be flexible, different things you want to do or need to do, you don't have to stand in line and feel like you're a herd of cattle." said Powers.

"You got black Friday, you got cyber Monday, so Saturday is designated for small business," said Meme Yanetsko, Greater Olean Chamber Of Commerce CEO.

Meme Yanetsko, CEO of the Olean Chamber of Commerce, handed out welcome mats to area business owners looking to take part.

"Those are normally taxpayers in that community and they in turn by gas, groceries, with the monies they make in their business so its sort of a circle effect and it just benefits everybody," said Yanetsko.

"We really can't compete, with the prices that the big box stores can offer," said Laurie McCarthy, McCarthy's Emporium Manager.

Laurie McCarthy manages McCarthy's Emporium in Olean, sellers of Christian items, chocolate, and teacher supplies.

She says Black Friday isn't really a busy day, but remains encouraged by what Saturday could bring.

"I think people often forget the importance of the small businesses, the downtown would be pretty dead if you didn't have some stores down here, to shop in, to look around in," said McCarthy. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
