BUFFALO, N.Y. -- It was a time for healing as family and friends came Saturday to the Deer Street home of 16-year-old Lewis Adams.

The teen was gunned down outside the home Friday evening.

Buffalo Police say Adams was getting into a car when another vehicle drove up, a gunman jumped out and shot the teenager multiple times.

Investigators are still looking for the suspects and say Adams was targeted.

However his family says there is no reason for his death.

"I think kids need to open up their minds and instead of picking up a gun, find another way to resolve the issue," said Adams’ aunt, Meiling Rodriguez.

"He did have issues like most teenagers do,” said Adams’ cousin Michael Jackson. “It’s just unfortunate that the people he wound up having problems with were just more callous so they did what they did."

Adams was a student at Riverside High School and played basketball. Family members say he was a fun-loving person.

"My favorite memory of Lewis, it's really his smile,” said Adams’ uncle Richard Laureano. "My nephew always was a very family oriented person. He loved his family. He loved his mom. Loved his aunts. He loved everybody.”

"He was goofy, funny, always smiling, and what happened to him was a tragedy that his family is dealing with and they are having a very hard time," said Rodriguez.

As the family grieves, they say the person feeling it the most is his mother.

“I was like a mother figure for him too so he was a great kid,” Adams’ aunt Janette Lopez. “A very great kid and he loved his mom and she's really, really grieving, really bad. We need a lot of prayers right now."

The family is accepting donations to cover the cost of the funeral which will be held next Wednesday.
