SHERMAN, N.Y. — A town hall meeting was held in Sherman Tuesday evening to discuss the proposed seasonal closing of a county highway facility.

County officials want to move the Sherman operations to the county's two other facilities in Sheridan and Falconer during the summer construction season and reopen the Sherman facility for the snow plowing season. They say it would save taxpayers about $150,000.

But business owners questioned the effect it will have on the local economy.

"Its more than just dollars and cents. Its lives we are talking about. If I can't make a living, I've got to close. I have six employees I'm going to lose," said Dwayne Woods, a business owner.

"We will go back and evaluate the information we received tonight and we will go from there," said George Spanos, Chautauqua County Public Facilities Director.

If approved, operations could be consolidated by the start of the spring construction season.
