Niagara Falls sees application boom for housing pilot program

  • Text size: + -

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - More than 30 recent college graduates have applied to be part of a pilot program in Niagara Falls that would have the city pay off their college loans.
People from as far away as San Jose, Calif., and Seattle have applied for one of 20 slots in the program. Chosen applicants would move to the city and receive up to seven thousand dollars toward student loan payments over two years.
City officials say the program is designed to get young people downtown.
"We have been losing population for decades," said Seth Piccirillo, the city's Community Development director. "We lose young people on a yearly basis. In the last 10 years alone, we lost 10 percent of our population, many of them young people. We need to keep and attract young people to survive."
Applications are still being accepted. They will be reviewed next week, with decisions coming February. Those who are chosen will begin moving in by next summer. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
