If you like the top hat, the thimble, or the dog, you better get online and vote. Monopoly is doing away with one of the tokens for good and adding a brand new one. YNN's Natalia Martinez reports millions of people are voting to save their favorite from extinction.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The presidential race is now over, but there's a new campaign that has more than 10 million people tuned in.
"I now fear that I may lose the right and privilege to use the thimble for all eternity," said Rick Marinaccio.
Marinaccio, the reigning U.S. Monopoly champ, is serious about saving the thimble after learning that Monopoly will give one of its eight tokens the boot for good.
But not everyone agrees with his choice.
"The thimble never really made sense to me. I never really understood that one," Youngstown resident Daryl Hoffman told YNN.
Right now, people can vote on Facebook and Twitter to save their favorite token. They can also chose its replacement: a helicopter, a cat, a toy robot, a guitar, or a diamond ring.
But some still have their favorites.
"I really like shoes, so I like the shoes better than all the pieces," Buffalo resident Selina Young said.
"The top hat is probably, a piece that I always liked, I guess," Hoffman confirmed.
We'll all have to wait until February 6th to find out which piece will continue to pass go... and which will be sent to jail.
The game has been around for 80 years and has nixed tokens before, like the rocking horse and cannon.
"It's a game that's been around for a very long time and I feel like it's part of the culture in America," Marinaccio explained.
Hasbro Gaming says its a move to appeal to today's Monopoly fans.
The current version will be available for several months and the new token will be on the shelves later this year.
