ALDEN, N.Y. -- A former Alden High School teacher has pleaded guilty to sending sexual messages to a 16-year-old student.

Gerald Wild, 46, of Amherst pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child on Friday morning in Town of Alden court.

Wild admitted to having the sexual discussions through messages to the student between December of 2011 and June of 2012. He was a social studies teacher at Alden at the time.

His teaching certificate was surrendered when he entered his guilty plea.

Wild faces a maximum of one year behind bars when he's sentenced in March.

The following is the letter to parents on the Alden website.

LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
Friday, January 18, 2013

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As Superintendent of the Alden Central School District, my primary concern is for the safety and welfare of all students. During the final week of last school year, the District received an allegation of possible inappropriate conduct by a teacher involving a minor student at Alden High School.

The District cooperated fully with the police, so that they could conduct an immediate and timely investigation. The District continued to work with police during their investigation, and I want to thank them for their efforts. Both the police and the District Attorney's Office asked the District not to communicate about the matter pending the results of the police investigation and the determination by the DA about potential charges.

I want to inform you that Mr. Gerald Wild II, a High School Social Studies teacher has pled guilty, as charged, to endangering the welfare of a child, before Justice Robert Woods yesterday in Alden Village Court. None of the conduct occurred during this school year. All indications from the police are that the incidents were isolated- involved only one student-and that most of the alleged conduct occurred through electronic means.

Mr. Wild has not been working in the district since he was placed on administrative leave in June 2012. Mr. Wild was prohibited from being on school property and having any contact with students during the investigation. Mr. Wild will not be returning to Alden Central Schools, nor any other school, as he was required to surrender his teaching certificate to the New York State Education Department as a condition of his plea.

As always, our priority remains maintaining a safe and nurturing educational environment for all of our students. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please direct them to me at 937-9116 extension 4171.

Sincerely,

Lynn Marie Fusco, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools
