It was a bitter winter night across the area Monday. Freezing temperatures between 7 and 12 degrees brought subzero wind chills. Roads were a mess in places, as drivers waited for the snow plows to clear the way.

"This weather came in quick and there's not much we can do about that, unfortunately," said Matt Oehlbeck with the Sherman Fire Department.

In Chautauqua County drivers were blinded by the sideways falling snow.
A semi, a Fed-Ex truck and another car to slam into each other in Mina.

"Once you cross Chautauqua Lake Bridge it's white out, so," Oehlbeck said.

The people in this accident were lucky. Only one person suffered minor injuries.
Over on the I-90, the speed limit became more like 10 miles an hour after five cars and a tractor trailor crashed near the Silver Creek interchange. No one was seriously hurt.

Traffic was stalled for two hours. The west bound lanes were shut down.
One woman ran out of gas during the traffic jam.

"The roads are bad and we had to use four wheel drive which ate all of our gas," said Angola resident Francesca Harris.

The Southtowns got anywhere from 6 to 10 inches of snow Monday, with up to another 10 inches expected to drop Tuesday.

"C'mon it's winter, it's the middle of January." You gotta be thankful. It's a couple of bad days like this, and it's nothing," said Evans resident Michael DiSarno.

But those couple of days will turn into the coldest stretch of the season.
Temperatures won't be back into the 20's until this weekend.

"I'm not gonna knock the warm weather, but it is Buffalo," DiSarno said.
