WESTERN NEW YORK -- Western New Yorkers woke up to bitter cold temperatures Tuesday morning. Temperatures were in the single digits and wind chills much lower.

Code Blue was issued for Monday night and will remain in effect until Friday night and could be extended through the weekend with cold temperatures forecasted.

The Buffalo City Mission and St. Luke's Mission of Mercy will be open 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. They will offer a warm place to stay along with a warm meal and a bed.

Cold Blue is called anytime temperatures reach 15 degrees or below or the wind chill factor is in the single digits

The Buffalo City Mission says on any given night there are more than 2,200 homeless people in Buffalo.

City Mission Director of Client Services Raine Schreiner said, "When the temperatures dip this low our first worry is that people are going to freeze to death out there not knowing how cold it really is because their hands are already numb. Of course we don't want them to freeze to death, so the priority is to get them into a warm shelter."

Although we might not like the cold, the organizers of the Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Tournament are smiling because they need the Erie Basin Marina to freeze, and freeze fast as the tournament is only a few weeks away.
