BUFFALO, N.Y. -- “I hope no one forgets that Patty gave her life for the city of Buffalo, and for the people," said Lt. Jim Panus, Buffalo PBA President.

It was a sad day for the Buffalo Police Department after learning that 48-year-old Patricia Parete passed away just after 2 Saturday morning.

Back in December of 2006, Officer Parete and her partner, Officer Carl Andolina were shot while they responded to a call near the corner of Chippewa Street and Elmwood Avenue.

Her injuries were so severe that she could no longer serve active duty at the B District station.

"The injuries she sustained on that day in December paralyzed her from the neck down," said Lt. Panus. "That injury cost her her life, and if they wanted a full police funeral, we would make that happen."

Buffalo Police declined to speak on camera Saturday out of respect for the family.

In a statement, Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said, "We woke up this morning to very sad news. Patricia Parete was a brave and courageous officer. We have suffered a tremendous loss, not only this department, but our city and community as well.”

Lt. Panus says Parete was a big animal lover and enjoyed riding motorcycles.

He says her death has impacted the entire department, but says right now they are being respectful of her family in their time of mourning.

"The family is crushed and are together and are planning her services and we respect whatever decision they make as to how they want to bury Patty," said Lt. Panus.

A funeral will be held this coming Wednesday at the Trinity Episcopal Church on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo.
