SINCLAIRVILLE, N.Y. — A Chautauqua County dogsled team is headed to North Pole, Alaska to represent Team USA in the World Championships.

Jay Olmstead Jr. has been running dogs since he was a kid and is currently the top ranked four-dog musher in the U.S. He has won both gold and silver International Sled Dog Racing Association medals.

The Sinclairville native, his wife Sherla, and their four sled dogs will be flying to Alaska at the end of the month where they will compete for the world title.

"They're more like a sprint race. We'll do anywhere between four to five miles, two days. Each day, we'll do five miles and it's the one whoever does it the fastest cause it's timed, and whoever has the fastest time usually wins," said Olmstead.

Olmstead says they will spend three weeks in Alaska and will race in two different competitions. They are still looking for sponsors to help with expenses.
