BUFFALO, N.Y. -- As the Sabres get set for Sunday afternoon's season opener, the organization elected to make a move for the future, announcing that Darcy Regier has signed a contract extension.
The move gives Regier a chance to finish the Sabres bounce back process. Of course, the Regier-Ruff combo has advanced to the conference finals four times, but it's been five years since they've won a playoff series. Over the last two years, Regier has been in charge of new integrations in the hockey department and he'll continue to oversee that for the foreseeable future.
While most of the NHL opened the season on Saturday, the Sabres went through one final workout to get ready for their Sunday opener. Lindy Ruff skated his players for about 45 minutes, but many stayed out a bit longer to fine tune some skills. It's been a long wait, and the Sabres begin the challenge of a shortened season with uncertainty against the Flyers, Sunday at 12:30.
